Over the past six months there were four trials of interest to Black people seeking justice from police and vigilante violence. Derek Chauvin finally went to trial for the murder of George Floyd, whose death kicked off protests throughout the summer and fall of 2020. We talked about some of those issues in our episode on policing. After the verdict the family was asked: Did you get justice? His brother stated Justice would be George still being here, but we did get accountability. In addition, a jury found former officer Kim Potter guilty of manslaughter for the death of Daunte Wright. The three men who killed Ahmaud Arbery were also found guilty. For our communities the question is are recent trials achieving justice?
In this episode we talk about the trials with attorney Glennon Threatt, a well known defense lawyer from the Birmingham AL area. We talk about Chauvin, the McMichaels and Bryan, and Kim Potter. We asked Threatt whether it was realistic for our communities to view these trials as evidence that police will now be held accountable. Glennon has some strong views on the issue and others connected to police and vigilante violence. Hope you enjoy: Are Recent Trials Achieving Justice?
