As we all know, COVID-19 swept through our communities in 2020 and we are still in its grip. Black and Brown communities suffered the worse impact, but all aspects of life, including the arts were impacted. Theaters across the nation were forced to close. But now, theaters are re-opening and this year nine Black plays are slated to open on Broadway! In this episode, we talk with two Black playwrights, Sharon Washing and Roger Q. Mason (’08) about the prospects of Black theater’s new renaissance.
Both Sharon and Roger are experienced playwrights and actors. They discuss their own journeys in story telling. As a result of their personal experiences they share their thoughts on the obstacles plays focusing on the lives of persons of color and the LGBT community face. Their responses to our questions about whether 9 Black plays can have success on Broadway is candid. Join us then for our discussion about whether we are about to experience Black Theater’s new Renaissance.
