WU Season 8, Ep. 2 – Choosing A Life In The Motherland – 3:8:25, 8.46 PM

In our last episode we started the season saying we would offer our listeners something new. In this episode we are taking you to Africa and our guest is going to talk about Choosing a life in the motherland. Our guest is Carol Mayes Basuru. It’s been a while since we had a Princeton grad (’78) on the show, but Carol certainly answers the call to challenge our listeners to think about something new. Carol is one of many Black ex-pats who have chosen to live outside of the United States. In her case she moved to Ghana.

Carol had a lucrative career in the film and television industry. While in grad school she directed two short films, one of which starred Isaiah Washington and Regina King. Both were shown at the prestigious African film festival known as FESTPACO. We managed to find a link to RITUALS for your viewing pleasure. Carol worked in various roles for Sesame Street, BET, Disney, and taught at the New York Film Academy and the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

The Big Move

While traveling and teaching throughout the world at the Film Academy’s satellite locations, she met the love of her life, Daniel Basuru in Paris. Daniel is a Burkinbe who was raised in Ghana. In Carol’s words they had a Skype relationship which they soon grew tired of. When Daniel suggested they move to Ghana, Carol agreed. But, unlike many ex-pats Carol didn’t move to the capital city, Accra. Instead she moved to a rural area where her husband could return to his farming roots. Carol shares her journey with us and explains why choosing a life in the motherland may be just the thing you are looking for.
