This is the second part of our discussion with artists JoAnne McFarland, Princeton ’77 and Gayle A. Hall. In this part: Conclusion: The Healing Power of Art our guest continue on their journey of creativity. Gayle talks about expanding the spaces where her art can exist. She suggests using your home as a vast artistic space through color and wall paper and tiles. JoAnne also uses unique spaces to show her work and the work of the other artists she curates.
Both of our artists speak about how fear causes people to short change themselves. For example, are they afraid of color? Are they afraid to let their guard down? Both artists want their work to help people be free from fear.
Harvard Medical School agrees that art has healing power. Huge institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York focus on the use of arts for healing. And our creatives in the Black community have traditionally used art to help heal us from the damage of systemic racism and to show resistance.
