Helping Communities Help Themselves
Community Led Initiatives
WU Season 4, Ep. 8, Helping Communities Help Themselves – 7-23-22, 11.12 PM

This is the last show for the season and we are focusing on empowering communities. We use the word empowerment often in specific contexts. But today, we are happy to welcome Dr. Rahsaan Harris from Citizens Committee for New York as our guest. During COVID-19 we were reminded of the importance of grass roots organizations engaging in mutual aid projects. But, grass roots initiatives are not new. NYC has a long history of recognizing the importance of community led initiatives. In this episode: Helping Communities Help Themselves, Dr. Harris, Princeton ’95, talks to us about the work at Citizens Committee for New York City. The organization is dedicated to helping support community led initiatives that can make a difference.

Grass roots organizations usually have difficulty finding funds to support their projects. They have great ideas for meaningful local projects, but they don’t have money. Most big donors want to see a certain infrastructure before they give money. Citizens Committee turns that model on its head. It uses micro grants to help grassroots groups get those community led projects up and running. The organization’s work shows you don’t have to be a huge nonprofit to make a difference. Enjoy: Helping Communities Help Themselves.
