In a previous episode we explored how Black families are losing their homes, but they are also losing family held land. Although many Black people in America have family roots in the southern part of the country, we don’t know about heirs property issues. In this episode, Dr. Sandra Thompson is connecting heirs property and Black land loss. As a result of Jim Crow era racism many Black land owners did not trust lawyers or the courts. Therefore, many land owners did not go to lawyers to get Wills or do estate planning. But, American property laws are complex and the inability to do estate planning put the family held Black land at risk. Listen and enjoy as Dr. Thompson takes us through connecting heirs property with Black land loss.
