On our last episode we learned about programs that teach children how to grow food. But, we look can also look at farming on the macro level. For decades Black farmers in the US have fought against racism at the United States Agricultural Department. In 1920 14% of farmers in this country were black and they owned 15 million acres of land. However, today only 2% of US farmers are black, owning only over 1 million acres. The loss of acres and the number of farmers can be tied directly to disparate treatment they received from USDA. This episode is called JUSTICE AHEAD FOR BLACK FARMERS? Our guest is Tracy McCurty from Black Belt Justice Center, who talks to us about a lawsuit the farmers started against USDA. Even though the farmers won, the settlement put them worse off. President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act included both debt relief and other remedies for farmers of color.
