WU Season 3, Ep. 8 – Sports Broadcasting & Athlete’s Activism – 12-29-21, 10.15 PM

We are pleased to close out the season with an episode for our sports fans. Our co-hosts discuss a wide range of sports with St. Louis broadcaster Mike Claiborne. In an earlier episode we focused on the experiences of retired players. But in Sports Broadcasting & Athletes’ Activism we are looking at how Black athletes are wielding power within their leagues.

Even before the death of George Floyd, professional basketball players, both in the NBA and WNBA set examples of how to use their platforms to create social change. Of course, Black athletes have consistently fought for freedom and equality for Black people. Who can forget the iconic image of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics. . They paid a high price for their expression, as did Colin Kaepernick. But Black athletes today still refuse to be silent on social justice issues or on their work, pay or mental health.

At the same time troublesome questions linger regarding the slow pace of diversifying leadership within certain professional sports leagues. Indeed, the lack of diversity impacts ownership, coaching staff and even reaches into the broadcast booth. All walks of life here in the US are impacted by racism and sports is no different. Let’s hear what Mike thinks may be ahead. Sit back and enjoy: Sports Broadcasting & Athletes’ Activism.
