Resources for Bringing Equity and Inclusion

Resources for Bringing Equity and Inclusion
Equality v. Equity

Our two part conversation with Janella Hinds and David Adams explored issues of educational equity. Educational systems in every state are remarkably complex. The amount of funding school systems receive can contribute to inequities. Where does the funding come from and how is it distributed? Political views on the value of certain types of education can contribute to inequities. And, of course, the will of some parents can contribute to inequities. We can’t provide an extensive list of information for every state, but we can help start you on your journey with Resources for Bringing Equity and Inclusion

Connecticut

We often think of Connecticut as one of the more progressive states. But, even progressive states have their issues. Connecticut’s funding choice are being critiqued. It’s also provides a good example of the divide between suburban communities and those with significant numbers of students of color. But organizations in Connecticut are trying to demonstrate that investing in communities of color is justice.

New York

New York has a long controversial history on educational reform. Who should control the schools? Do parents have school choice? How will the schools be funded? How can segregation, particularly in the New York city schools be dismantled? What role have charter schools played in the abandonment of the public school function? These issues continue to play out today. Parents are suing the new mayor, Eric Adams, over school budget cuts based on declining enrollment.

Meanwhile, neighboring state, New Jersey also struggles with many of the same issues.

Not Just an East Coast Issue

It’s not just urban areas that are experiencing educational inequity. Rural areas can also have problems. The Hewitt Foundation identifies educational inequities as a nation-wide problem. And yet, the former Secretary of Education, Betsey DeVos advocates for the elimination of the federal Department of Education. The future educational needs of Black and Brown children are critical. We hope these Resources for Bringing Equity and Inclusion will help you keep your eyes on the issues.
